چکیده

The orders state that pupils should be taught, “Phonic knowledge, focusing on the relationships between print symbols and sound patterns” (Reading, KS1, p.7). The orders suggest that opportunities should be given for “Identifying and using a comprehensive range of letters and sounds, including combinations of letters, blends and digraphs, and paying specific attention to their use in the formation of words.” The inclusion of the word ‘digraph’ (two letters representing one sound) forces teachers to consider the limitations of the One-Letter-Makes-One-Sound-Method which is used in many schools during the early stages of reading. Let us take the ‘c’ ‘h’ in chair’. Saying consecutively the initial sounds (c) and (h) will not result in the new consonant sound (ch). Teachers are also forced to distinguish between digraphs (e.g. ‘c’ ‘h’) and blends, where two letters represent two consonant sounds. For example, at the start of the words ‘Bright Bridge’, quoted below, the two letters ‘b’ ‘r’ are blends in which each letter is a graph. A graph being one letter representing one sound.

The Missing Link: Commentary on LaBerge's Triangular Circuit

LaBerge (1997) proposes that underlying attention and self-awareness is a triangular circuit involving interconnected posterior cortical, thalamic and prefrontal neural ensembles. While the target paper makes only passing reference to it, the reticular nucleus of the thalamus is an integral part of the triangular circuit he posits. Indeed, it is essential to a complete understanding of his model.
